Blizzard leak reveals some odd statements on Diablo 3, Overwatch and more

Yahoo Finance writer Tae Kim posts some leaks apparently telling us what’s going on at Blizzard with Diablo III, Heroes of the Storm, and Overwatch.

Some of the statements released to Tae Kim are very strange to say the least but let’s take a look at them all.

First of all Blizzard execs apparently have “low expectations” for Heroes of the Storm and senior staff might be laid off.

The Overwatch business model is said to be still in flux and the game is unlikely to be released this year although they are trying.

Hearthstone has reportedly gone well beyond their expectations reaching 75 million players which is not surprising based on previous numbers released by Blizzard. Blizzard’s next Hearthstone expansion is slated for April

StarCraft 2‘s next game Legacy of the Void is already complete and will be released in the second quarter of this year.

The most concerning rumour in the leak was that the Diablo 3 team has been moved to a new project set in the StarCraft universe and the game will be similar to Digital Extremes’ Warframe and contain gameplay aspects from “Left4Dead, DayZ, Smite, and other MOBAs.”

Since the leak was posted, Blizzard has issued a statement regarding the Diablo 3 rumour:

“The Diablo III team is on continuing to support the game with patch content. We generally don’t comment on rumors or speculation, but I do want to make sure it’s clear that they’re not working on a secret project in the StarCraft universe.”

All rumours and leaks should be taken with a large pinch of salt but the low expectations for Heroes of the Storm may not surprise everyone as we recently found out when we threw Tim into the game for his opinion. That said, there is plenty of interest in the game at the moment with Blizzard selling early beta access for what is a free to play game. It will be hard for Blizzard to push this game beyond their own community because of the popularity of DOTA 2, SMITE,  and League of Legends.

The Diablo 3 rumour does sound far-fetched. Blizzard may be experimenting with a new game and team members are likely to have moved around, but culling the Diablo 3 team for a new project seems very unlikely as another expansion will probably appear in the future.

The response from Blizzard does only cover Diablo 3, and has obviously been carefully worded, so it’s hard to ascertain if there’s any truth in the other statements.

  1. I think Blizzard had low expectation for they new products like the card game, who will have think that it will work out so well with al the cards games been out since age ??

But I think the same magic will happen to their Moba game because they really cornered what was important and bad in the genre. Like the f*******king huging tower which will make you loose 45 mins of your life because your ennemies just don’t dare to take a step outside of the tower zone.

No, Heroes of Storm is fast and furious, so less rage quit less toxic comments and people focus more on gameplay.

I even wish that this game would’ve been out before the others because of previous games the players adopted stupid behavior like staying in their lines without playing objectives. How could it happen when every new players have to do the tutrial ? Because those players didn’t care since they played previous Moba. The result ? Selfish players who don’t play as a team and stay on their line forever.

  2. I’m just concerned about DIablo 3, more items are good, but more classes are better for me at least :).

  3. Why does the Diablo 3 rumor seem far fetched? If you play the game you will have noticed how it takes them forever to do anything with it and 90% of the patches revolve around negating then implementing previous patch changes. There is no way that game has anything but a skeleton crew still on it.

  4. Can’t beleive people are THAT into Hearthstone…..i’m sure that was a shock to blizzard. HotS looked kind of nintendo gameboyish in style from the gameplay videos i’ve seen (small characters, somewhat static aerialview, and etc.), which is part of the reason I haven’t given it a try. It also appears you have to pay for it, no trial, which is a big turn off for me…esp. since I didn’t like the gameplay videos.

Super disappointed about Overwatch though, I was hoping Beta would start soon….
Don’t really care about Diablo. :3

Their quarterly earnings call confirmed 25 million registered users for Hearthstone. 75 mil is ridiculous. I would wager that all of this so-called “leaked” info is full of excrement.
